Dota 2: The Board Game
Dota 2: The Board Game is an original board game based on the video game Dota 2. *All of the heroes you know and love are included, as well as their abilities — though altered to fit turn based gameplay — and over 60 items. The core gameplay will be familiar to those who have played Dota before; heroes begin the game quite weak, they “farm” to gain gold and experience, they buy items and level up, gradually increasing their power. There are towers to destroy, neutral creeps to farm, different hero roles (support, carry, jungle, etc), Roshan, runes, status effects and a whole host of other features.
*Underlord is missing at the moment, but I intend to add him in future, along with The Gambler.
Dota 2: The Board Game is a team game for 2-10 players. Each team controls 5 heroes, with an ultimate goal of destroying the enemy’s Ancient. The enemy team has the same objective, so balancing offence and defence is paramount.
There are 10 turns in a round: 1 turn for each hero. Other than always alternating turns back and forth between teams, there is no set order; it is up to the player to decide when to use each hero. For example, a hero that went second in the previous round, may go tenth in the next. One important rule to keep in mind, is that you must announce which hero you are rolling for, before rolling.
There is no limit to the amount of rounds in a game; the game simply continues until either team is able to destroy an Ancient.
The game is played on a tile based board; movement, attack range and ability range all rely on the tile system. For movement, each hero has a “movement speed” which is added to their dice roll, they may then move that amount of tiles (or choose to only move some, or not at all). There are items which increase a hero’s movement speed and many abilities which can impact movement speed. The heroes will do battle over key locations on the board, such as farming zones and neutral camps which grant gold and experience at the end of the round. If a team is to be successful, they must choose their battles wisely.
For more information, including detailed explanations of movement, attack range and ability range, please refer to the rulebook:
I have spent about 5 months creating this game, all the while trying to figure out how to fit my ideas within the framework of Tabletop Simulator. Everything is sort of “up in the air” in the sense that I did what I thought was best, but trying to test by myself or with a friend, isn’t really practical. There are 111 heroes, 444 abilities, 68 items, individual stat gains for each hero etc. I need input to help shape the game, to see what I can improve, what works, what doesn’t. I am especially interested in the current tower health and damage values, as well as Roshan’s health and damage values.
The current rulebook has a lot of information, but it is just a draft and all of the time I am discovering interactions that I didn’t even think of and need to clarify. That said, I am considering simplifying the game, as in its current form, it is quite cumbersome. The good thing is, changes are easy to make.
Starglade – for the Predone Table/Trays with Large Inserts mod.
allencoded – for the Dungeons and Dragons Inventory Coin Tracker (DnD). This is the basis for nearly all of the scripting in the game. I had very little idea what I was doing in the beginning, but looking through his code, I was eventually able to understand it and alter its purpose for my game. I’m very grateful, thanks!
Scootaloo – for the Custom Dice and Coins/Tokens. I believe I used this to make the sun/moon.
Finster – for the Table Extension mod.
MrStump – for the Timer – Scripted Countdown Tool mod and for answering a scripting question I had. Thanks!
Also, last but not least, a big thank you to Valve and all those involved in Dota 2’s development. Basically all of the art seen in this game is “official” Valve art. Even the tower/Ancient sheet — which may not be immediately recognizable– is taken from the Radiant and Dire fountains respectively.
I hope you enjoy the game. All feedback is welcome!
