Sniper isn’t just a “demo replacement”, he has MASSIVE utility.

Jarate for minicrit support, autocollects money, arguably BETTER than demo due to longer range so you can hit meds and groups of bots at a safer distance.

Hell, nearly every sniper rifle can work for MvM, except for the classic.

Sydney sleeper is good for a more “supportive” playstyle since you can coat bots in a radius when you land headshots.

Machina isn’t exactly an AMAZING choice but the extra damage on max charge and built-in pierce is always nice.

Bazaar Bargain is a nice option if you’re good at headshotting, but it’s pretty neutral in how good or bad it is.

Probably the best choice for a rifle is either stock or The Hitman’s Heatmaker, since the Heatmaker lets you land more headshots more quickly with the focus mechanic and since you are relying on headshots, the -20% bodyshot damage is pretty meaningless.

Like I said though, sniper has arguably more utility than demo with lots of cool stuff at his disposal.
In terms of a guide for a brand new player I don’t feel the need to explain beyond the primary function of picking sniper, which is indeed as a demo replacement.

I agree with some of your points, I’m not a “meta is the best and only way” kind of guy, it’s about having fun but having something that works. The BB is not picked because it only saves you money on the charge upgrade; it’s bonus does not apply anything extra if you purchase charge speed from the store. I agree most rifles do the job well, I think the Machina and Heatmaker are the best.

I enjoy using the Huntsman, though my team is often not ok with it so I’ll switch for them.

But sniper has more room for error. Demo is picked OVER Sniper because Demo is the safer, or more user friendly, pick. Snipers have to be at least competent to do their job. And idiot can put sticky traps and nuke bots with minimal effort.

But I’ll take a good sniper over a good demo any day.
*Disclaimer, all of my posts are geared towards the brand new MVM players; as were the videos.

I’ve found that new MVM players can have a fairly difficult job laying (useful) sticky traps even when telling them where the next giant robot is coming. If they can play sniper at all in PVP and get explosive headshot than they’re more likely to learn how to get all the uber meds.

A demo will most likely be more helpful against hoards, though depending on the performance of heavy, solly, ect; the main concern may only be the uber medics.

Maybe it’s me, but I’ve met plenty of new players that ask to switch from demo because they can’t use even the stock well.

Upgrade Paths, go in order
Soldier – MAX Reload and Firing Speeds, 1 tick each Health on Kill and Rocket Specialist, MAX damage, everything else.
I prefer having extra ammo because I spam. Alot.

Scout – MAX Running Speed, MAX Jump Height, Mad Milk Slow and MAX Crit/Explosive/Bullet Resistances, MAX Milk Cooldown Reduction, everything else.

Heavy – 2 ticks ONLY Firing Speed (the last two are bugged and only increase your speed by 2%), MAX Crit/Explosive/Bullet Resistances, MAX Health on Kill, 1-2 ticks P E N E T R A T I O N, the rest is up to you. No knockback, it halves your damage.

Demo – STICKY BOMB LAUNCHER FIRST ALWAYS. MAX Reload and Firing Speeds, 1 tick Health on Kill, MAX damage, everything else.
I prefer Scottish Resistance for NUCLEAR levels of damage. If you use it, get a tick of Clip Size.

Engie – MAX Dispenser Range FIRST ALWAYS, Wrench – Firing Speed (more whacks = more build faster, build it up as you go), Building Health (build it up as you go, typically 1-2 ticks per wave for balancing other upgrades), 1-2 ticks Extra Metal (more metal = more build faster), Sentry Firing Speed (2 ticks max, unless you have a wrangler), 2-Way Teleporter (good for canteen abuse on final wave), everything else.
I try to stay away from canteen upgrades as it is usually a waste, but having 2-3 building upgrade canteens can save you in a pinch.

Medic – MAX SHIELD FIRST ALWAYS, Max Healing Mastery and Overheal Expert (more heal faster = more revive faster = more shield faster = more live not deader). That’s it. Really. The rest depends on your style. Medic can be a wildly fun class as you can do quite a bit. I use MAX Canteen Specialist (confirm it first or you’ll pay full price for the Uber Canteens) and Ubersaw Firing Speed to invul my test subject, rapid jab a giant, and unleash crits OVER and OVER and OVER. Find a away that suits you and keep your boobs alive.

The rest I’ll let you figure out. Guides are on steam about Pyro, Sniper, and Spy that’ll be WAY better than me.

You pretty much nailed it, I do think brand new players need to be reminded on resistance. I see dying (a lot) with new players and buying back in, I think upgrading damage can be put off a bit until the brand new player gets the hang of MVM.

Sniper is a great class, he’s just a demo replacement, nothing too special about playing him.
