ATTENTION: Game LONG/FAILING to load?? Check here!!

Okay I’ll start telling my story, I have DotA 2 for almost a year, after playing normally issues started to come up, first I noticed the loading times [after finding a match and accepting it] started to increase, then the loading would just give up, loading after 2 minutes, when, for everyone else I had failed to connect.

When I first installed DotA 2 my game would load in under 30 seconds , a few months later a Minute , and recently I was lucky if I could play at all.

I have a Quad Core i7, a GT650 1gb Video Card, and 8gb of RAM. So I knew hardware was not a problem.

So, I went to Google for a solution saying: I can find the solution in no time! Blummpp.. Turns out I didn’t, after checking dozens of forums including reddit, steam forums, and even here, I noticed there was plenty of people with this problem, but simply no one would care, not even the developers here, dozens if not hundred of posts of people yelling for help and no one listening. WHY? Because they simply didn’t have this problem, so they could’t care less.

Well bear with me because I might have come with a solution:

1. Hardware/Software
Make sure you meed the minimum recommended system settings; hardware and software included, this is the single most important thing.
Processor speed, Processor usage, Physical and Virtual RAM, Dedicated video memory, Defrag your Hard Drive, etc.

Use the Task Manager to see if your processor is being used by any other programs while running Dota, lookup for “RESOURCE MONITOR” on the search box and check for any programs using large amounts of memory, or under the network tab check for programs using your network, as this can affect the loading time and the PING you have while playing.

2. Launch Options
Currently after several tries I’ve found the launch options for better loading times are:

STEAM -> Library (All Games) -> DotA 2 Properties -> Set Launch Options

-novid – nod3d9ex +clientportany 1

-novid (Skips intro video).
-nod3d9ex (Runs the game in Directx9 instead of 11, reducing the load on the GPU and CPU for faster game loading, there has been no visual changes for me)
+clientportany 1 (This allows the game to change to different ports when connecting to the game server, I will explain that later on)

This is how it looks on mine:

3. Router/Network
Note: Make sure you enabled [ +clientportany 1 ] under launch options!

Ok. Here comes the tricky part, but I believe this IS the secret ingredient because after adding this I have been playing with no more problems.

First of all you will need acces to your network router, the main one that delivers internet to you and the place where you reside.

The reason? DotA 2/Steam, uses different ports to connect to the matchmaking server, find a game, and finally, allow you to connect to that game, IF for some reason you are not able to, per say a blocked port on a firewall, or a simply configuration on some program, It wont let you connect properly to a game, if not at all, so what are we doing here?

We are going to Forward the ports [Port Forwarding] that Dota 2 and Steam uses so these will bypass any blocked firewalls, configurations or anything like that.

First of all you need to know what kind of router you have; Manufacturer and Model.

After you have that acces this page:

Follow the corresponded guide and when you get to the point of “Which ports to forward?” add these:

From 27000 to 28999 UDP
From 27014 to 27050 TCP
From 4380 to 4380 UDP

This is how it looks on mine (Notice I blacked out my IP because the NSA might be watching)

4. Updating Drivers

Note: This is something I have not tested since I fixed my problem before trying this
TRY DOWNGRADING ONLY AS A LAST RESORT!

I’ve seen some posts where people said that Updating, Changing to BETA or even Downgrading their video drivers helped with this problem.

You can try BETA drivers which a lot of people said they help a when it comes to gaming, I did once but since I didn’t notice any improvement I just stick with Stable drivers instead.

Please let me know if this guide helped you and post a comment so everyone else can see it!!
