Only really play him against nukers, if you go against to many tanks/right clickers you’re going to get spells that require you to get close or that get you close which is the opposite of what you want.

Magical Nukers. Otherwise you shall die.

Rubick is a very squishy hero. He’s very susceptible to getting nuked down. He can get some magic resistance, but that’s about it.
Other than that he’s one of the many “Damage, Disable, Other, and Ult” heroes (Shadow Shaman, Lion, Lina, etc.) Levitate is a good disable that has the added bonus of stunning people around the target at the end. Fade Bolt allows Rubick to deal some small but decent magic damage, as well as reduce the enemy’s right clicks a bit.

Rubick’s Ult is the star of the show, really. You can take any spell and use it for yourself! Don’t focus purely on Ults. While having Madien’s Ult (just taking Maiden as an example) is nice, having her Frostbite can sometimes be enough to kill someone.

Honestly I can’t explain how2Rubick, mostly because I’m too lazy to write a guide for him.
I’ve been using Purge’s guide, and the tactics from the DotaCinema guide. But those are both super old.

There are 3 things you need to focu on as Rubick:

1) Will Rubick benefit by having Aghs? A stolen WD Death Ward with Aghs could be the difference between you getting a team wipe vs getting team wiped. But don’t just get Aghs for the sake of getting Aghs. If your team has the superior team fights, then other support items might be more useful.

2) Patience. Patience. Patience. Don’t steal spells for the sake of stealing spells, even if a team fight has started. Know when to steal what. This requires that playing as Rubick requires you to concentrate a lot on situational awareness. The right spell at the right time can completely rek.

3) Stay the hell back and don’t die because you want to be in the frontlines, for example, Ravage. If you use spells like Ravage it’s not because you are going to initiate a team fight. You don’t have the tankiness that Tide would. This means to understand that you are RUBICK, you are NOT the hero you stole the spell from.
