Is there any way to assign the bots on your team to specific lanes ?

I’m trying to get better at Dota, ideally avoiding playing with other people until I feel confident that I won’t just wreck the game for my team mates, so I’ve put in most of my 50ish hours with the game in solo bot matches. I’m trying to make the jump from medium to hard, but it’s a pretty big step in difficulty – I feel up to it, or at least ready to learn by losing, but it feels really important to be using good composition and lane discipline to keep pace with the other team.

Thing is that the bots on my team just refuse to do that. If I’m playing a support, then I’m always in a lane with another support. If I’m a carry, I end up with another carry. The carries only seem to last hit, and the supports only deny, and in either case they are so much better at it than me which forces me to take on the alternate role than the one I came in to practice with a character who is really badly suited to it.

I’ve tried barging into the bots lanes instead of just filling in the empty spot, but the AI seems hellbent on doing the wrong thing. If I bring my Lich or Crystal Maiden into a lane that’s got Drow Ranger and Lion in, the Drow Ranger is the one that leaves. If I bring Viper then Lion leaves. One game started with my support partnerd with a carry (Luna I think) but then she rode off to chase a gank at mid, then stayed at mid and another support game to top, just in time for the game to start.

Sometimes just by sheer luck I end up with a lane partner who’s roles compliment mine, and then I have a good game where I can actually practice in a meaningful way, but I don’t want to keep having to make new games over and over until I luck out.

It’s doubly frustrating because I’m trying to expand my repetoir of heros and better understand item and skill builds which makes the first ten minutes in lane the most important part of the game for me to practice.

So. Is there a way to set the bots on my team to start in a specific lane, so that I can actually learn from those games? Being wrecked because I’m underleveled, or cleaning house because I’m miles ahead of the bots and can beat their whole team doesn’t teach me anything.

Yes, I do know I can play with humans by the way. Yes, in public games there are issues with lanes etc too, and thats just the way it goes sometimes. But when I’m trying to practice one specific thing human games aren’t a great fit. With bots I can run a new character to level 10, do really badly, quit and start again – I have to imagine that’s frowned upon.

No-one wants a guy on their team who’s deliberately trying to go against the optimal build just so he can understand why the optimal build is better, or who’s only knowledge of his characters skills comes from reading the tooltips as he levels up.

The games got a bunch of decent resources to help you go from a complete newbie to rookie who at least knows what he should be doing, even if you can’t execute, but there’s very little to help you go from a rookie to a decent player. All I need are team mates with good fundamentals so I can focus on my character and my role and keep trying again and again until I get the execution down.

Being stuck in half hour games, when I only want to practice a small part over and over makes it extremely hard to see any progress – It feels like I’m trying to learn to hit a fastball, but instead of standing at the plate and getting pitch after pitch thrown at me, I get struck out, then I have to go field and wait for my next at bat.

Adding on to that getting yelled at by more experienced players, and being annoyed at less experienced ones makes for a pretty bad situation to practice in.

Anyways, I know this has been way longer than it needs to; I’m just frustrated. Any advice on how to get the bots to play ball would be great.
