With the Bucharest Major underway, the group stage promises to be full of exciting matches as teams look to establish themselves early. Here is a brief breakdown of the matches of day 1.

Team Liquid – LGD. Forever Young

Team Liquid managed to strike first this tournament, taking down LGD. Forever Young in convincing fashion. While not the quickest game of the day, Liquid were able to secure the win in just over 31 minutes, mostly off the back of a dominant performance from Amer “Miracle-” Al-Barkawi on Shadow Fiend, putting up an impressive 13/4/8 stat line.

Team Secret – compLexity Gaming

One of the longer matches for the day, Team Secret were ultimately able to prove they were the stronger team after taking down compLexity Gaming in just under 44 minutes. While compLexity’s Rasmus “Chessie” Blomdin put up a valiant effort, scoring 14/7/7, it was largely overshadowed by Team Secrets Yeik “MidOne” Nai Zheng and Marcus “Ace” Hoelgaard, with their 18/6/13 and 14/5/12 scores taking over the match.

Evil Geniuses – paiN Gaming

A not so close match-up between Evil Geniuses and paiN Gaming was the third game of the day, with Evil Geniuses proving that they had a good read on their opponents coming into this match. Special note goes to EG’s Clinton “Fear” Loomis for putting up a very respectable 10/0/9 in their comprehensive victory.

Virtus. Pro – OpTic Gaming

A surprising outcome for this match, as the winners of ESL One Katowice 2018, Virtus. Pro fell victim to a late game surge from OpTic Gaming. While VP Roman “RAMZES666” Kushnarev managed to put up an impressive 12/5/4 stat line, OpTics Per Anders Olsson “Pajkatt” Lille also managed to put up 11/1/10, taking down the champs and putting their name on the board.

Mineski – TNC Pro Team

TNC Pro Team walked out of the arena with the victory here, taking down Mineski in one of the longer matches of the day. While it was a tense and close early game, TNC managed to pull through, in large part because of Marc Polo Luis “Raven” Fausto’s dominating performance on Gyrocopter, putting up 15/0/12 to make his personal kill list as long as the entire Mineski roster.

Vici Gaming – VGJ. Thunder

The shortest match of the day was another upset, as the team that came second at ESL One Katowice 2018, Vici Gaming, fell prey to VGJ. Thunder. Vici looked lost, as VGJ. Thunder seemed to have them locked down all over the map. Liu “Sylar” Jiajun was the stand out for this match, putting up a score of 7/1/11 in their decimation of Vici.

Natus Vincere – OG

OG Definitely had the better read on their opponent this match, beating out Natus Vincere in another longer game. OG managed to amass quite the lead by the 30 minute mark, before a resurgence by Natus Vincere, led by Vladislav “Crystallize” Krystanek managed to bring the lead back into check. OG were not deterred however, retaking the lead and ending their first day with a win.

Newbee – Vega Squadron

The final match of the day saw Newbee take down Vega Squadron, with Song “Sccc” Chun leading the charge with his score of 11/3/5. While Newbee ran away with the game, Vega Squadron did put up as much of a fight as they could, with Nikita “Palantimos” Grinkevich putting up 10/2/5 stats in a desperate battle to stay in the game. Sadly, Vega Squadron would have to hope for better results in the days to come.
