DotA 2 vs LoL: Comparing the Jungles
Baron Von Richthofen
So this is the first in a series of articles I’m posting which isn’t meant to compare the games as in which is better, but rather help to illuminate the differences between the games and how they’re actually vastly different in terms of gameplay.
I’m also probably going to start writing articles on LoL, I just haven’t decided on the topic yet. So if anyone has any suggestions regarding either the DotA or the LoL articles let me know. A friend had suggested I do champion reviews (in depth guide which goes into how they fit into the meta, playstyle, and the changes that they’ve gone through throughout the history of LoL).
Seems like a comparison article, but the subtext really is “Why Dota2 jungling is better than LoLs”
It shows the strengths of both, but only if you’ve played LoL and have all the info of that in your brain.
I honestly prefer LoL in terms of the jungle after playing HoN for quite a long time. The Jungle in HoN was just the carries farm after awhile and made up for any mistakes made in the laning phase (highly subject to debate I realize, but this is from my own public game experience and not competitive by any means).
DotA 2 and HoN are pretty much the same game, while Dota2 and LoL are like comparing Age of Empires 2 and Total Annihlation to each other. Same genre, different game.
The jungle mechanics in DotA are really kinda dumb, and all the strategies are basically based of the WC3 limitations. I don’t understand why HoN and Dota 2 would keep the same mechanics tbh, but I guess people are used to them.
A very bias article about how everything that is in DOTA is harder/better then league.
You can also just turn the argument around in the article and say for example ” in league the jungler have to keep track of individual spawn time and coordinate his rout while in DOTA2 he just have to look at the clock if its close to :00″
And the insatiable kiddie masses are still here.
WHEN THE **** DOES SCHOOL START.
“LoL and DotA now appear more dissimilar than ever and are rather distant relatives.“
“it’s just one piece of the large picture for how the strategies and playing style of these two very similar games can greatly differ.”
Self contradiction in articles is very professional and lends a lot of credence to your arguments.
So. what happens when DotA2 actually arrives? Does the LoL community get cut by half? Do all the quality players move to DotA and leave LoL with the kiddies and griefers?
I’ve glimpsed DotA’s community and, frankly, I’m not impressed. They seem like the types you would rather lose an arm than have to play with people new to the game.
If you enjoy HoN/DotA, then you will enjoy DotA 2. Going straight from LoL into DotA though feels unfun, but I imagine if you stick it out it wouldn’t be a problem. I played DotA and HoN for a long time. A lot of the mechanics such as the jungle, AP Scaling, and in general more complex team fights (in my own opinion, this one is subject to wild interpretation – mostly because CC is a lot shorter in LoL) do not translate well from LoL to HoN/DotA.
HoN/DotA also has a lot of mechanics that do not translate well either, such as denying. I was pretty pissed when I couldn’t deny. However I stuck with it because my friends played LoL, and found out there are different ways to deny then racking up a deny score of 60. Honestly, they are two different games LoL and HoN/DotA. Right now the market is HoN and LoL, soon it will be HoN/DotA and LoL. I’m sure LoL will lose a little bit of support, but not nearly as much as some people are making it out to be.
The games are different. They are similar, but to each their own. It’s like I mentioned before. It’s like arguing whether Age of Empires 2 or Total Annihilation were better RTS back in the day. People are going to like different things due to the different mechanics in the game. instead of hating on the other game, just play whichever one you enjoy and have fun. If you honestly hate LoL, then you will probably hate DotA 2 as well. It’s like WoW in a way, if you hate WoW you will probably not enjoy other MMO’s. You sure get a ton of people that try them though.
