I’m old. Why MOBA?

I don’t understand the phenomenon known as MOBAs.
When I look at the STEAM player #’s I am absolutely staggered by the amount of people regularly playing DOTA 2. And I hear of even more immense #’s from LoL. Then I check out purge’s channel in youtube and I try to watch these games and I’m just mostly bored. Compared to watching SC2 or Kripparians stuff or any of my BF3’s subs, the game is just poorly paced and seemingly not conducive to a casual viewing audience. When i see that the game is 30min I know its a blow out. If the game is 1hr it will be a more competetive game but it totally lags at different spots. And just trying to come to grips with whats happening and why is still a trial.
Is this a game that you have to play to understand? And whats with the popularity? Is it because of the original DOTA mod for WC3 was already so popular? If so why was it so popular in the first place?
Pretty much. I would hear the guys at my work talking about the matches they had every other night all the time and never understood the appeal of it either (LoL). However, once I gave it a go with them and began to understand the mechanics and flow of the game, it became a rather nice competitive time sink.
Nowadays, I actually do avoid trying to play it due to the time requirements for matches and how addicting it can be. It can be a really competetive game and that competitiveness is probably one of its main appeals to players.
I understand why MOBAs are so big in the esport community, they are (somewhat) easy to learn and hard to master, with skill being a very important factor because each and every fail you made if contributing to the other team; it’s all very chaotic and presents great MP mayhem, watching and playing alike.
What I don’t understand is how lesser tier people like me find the will to play it for so damn much and so damn long. I get it: it’s fun while it lasts, and it lasts pretty long, but after the initial period every game is pretty much the same. one fails, other gets overpowered, the best wins. I can’t motivate myself to play it again because it got very boring.
That, and all the WCG tryhards plaguing most of the matches.
Because people realized that being good at Warcraft 3 requires intelligence and dedication. Hence ARTS.

Starcraft 2 is pretty tame (and outdated). It really doesn’t hold up to more complex RTSes in terms of both macro and micro. It’s economic system is so laughably primitive.

There are no “more complex” RTSs, that are competitive and fun to watch. it holds up very well considering that it dominates.
And thus why e-sports will always be a joke. A game is never fun to watch if you don’t understand its mechanics and the different variables you have to take into account. Constructing a new RTS, taking into account the progression of the RTS genre of the last decade, would require a new playerbase to explore the nuts&bolts of the game. It would require the viewer to do the same. And for a broadcasting media dedicated for viewer count, why opt for a more proper RTS, when you can stay safe with a 14-year old outdated, never that unique in the first place, RTS, and kiddie games that don’t require much thought from the viewer?
